event horizon

  • The Harmonics are proud to present Event Horizon, our thirteenth studio album, first album since Signal Lost in 2019, and first ever concept album. Event Horizon marks the culmination of over half a decade of work and features performances by nearly thirty past and present Harmonics, making this our largest album ever by number of vocalists.

It features songs arranged by current and recent Harmonics and notable a cappella arranger Jon Pilat '99, and performed by six years of Harmonics cohorts, making it a testament to multiple generations of Harmonics talent. Mastered by Grammy Award-winner and longtime Harmonics collaborator Bill Hare, we hope Event Horizon will delight Harmonics fans both new and old.

In the time between Signal Lost and Event Horizon, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the world forever. It severely limited the ability of musical, and especially vocal, groups to rehearse, perform, record, and be in community together. The very DNA of Event Horizon was defined by the pandemic and its repercussions.

From its earliest conception, we decided to use Event Horizon to express the many emotions the pandemic brought into our lives: anger, fear, sadness, loneliness, grief, despair. Yet in the process of singing together over video call, in masks, or spaced out in Stanford’s underground parking lots, we found another emotion: hope. Hope that things would get better; hope that love would triumph over fear; hope that, eventually, we could be together again, as classmates, Harmonics, and friends.

While the world as we knew it has changed, the release of Event Horizon is a signal that our hope was not misplaced. A world that supports music and togetherness has once again become possible. Despite this recovery, it has never been more vital for The Harmonics, and all Stanford arts groups,  to exist as a safe place for all students to create, express themselves, and support each other.

It is thanks to the commitment of our group members and the support of the Stanford community that, through and following the pandemic, The Harmonics have been able to continue creating and sharing our music with you, through live performances and now Event Horizon.

We hope you will enjoy the album. As we approach the 35th reunion of The Harmonics, we look forward to continuing to produce innovative, original music for decades to come.

    Sincerely,

    The Harmonics
